Ulisse Montepulciano
Tenuta Ulisse
The main grape variety of this wine is Montepulciano, which makes up 100%. Unlike many young, fruit-forward Montepulciano d’Abruzzo reds on the market, Ulisse Montepulciano particularly emphasizes elegance and balance, using low-yield old vine grapes and combining modern and traditional techniques to showcase the unique terroir of Abruzzo. The grapes are sourced from the slopes of Chieti province in the Abruzzo region of Italy, at an altitude of 150–250 meters. The soil is a mixture of calcareous clay and small pebbles, well-drained and rich in minerals. This area enjoys ample sunshine during the day and cool breezes at night, with significant temperature differences between day and night, which helps the grapes accumulate rich fruit aromas and the right amount of natural acidity. The grapes are hand-picked in the early mornings of late September to preserve optimal ripeness and the integrity of the berries. During the winemaking process, whole bunches of grapes are first cold-stored for short-term maturation in a low-temperature environment, followed by gentle destemming and temperature-controlled fermentation for about 12–14 days, maintained at 22–24 °C to keep the fruit aromas fresh. After fermentation, the wine is blended and aged in French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for about 6 months, allowing the wood and fruit aromas to meld, resulting in a rounded yet not heavy body, while preserving the unique deep color and tannic strength of Montepulciano. The alcohol content is 14% vol.
